Synopsis:
Objectives: This course aims to enable GP participants to identify and manage patients with drug and alcohol problems more effectively in their own practice. By the end of the course the participants should be able to: State which are the common drugs of dependence and/or abuse in the community and discuss the relative priority of each of these in their general practice; Be able to identify and manage appropriately the common problems seen in general practice in relation to drugs of dependance and/ or abuse; Develop strategies for identifying harmful patterns of use in their patients and develop brief intervention strategies which are appropriate for their practice' Be able to audit their practice to monitor their performance in the area of drug and alcohol abuse, in a way which is both meaningful and relevant to the constraints of general practice' Be able to demonstrate improved performance in their field following participation in the course; Define their own pathways of support and referral for the more complex cases unable to be managed in their general practice.
