Clinical and therapeutic dietetics 1 (18 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: At the completions of the subject the student will: 1. be compotent to apply the clinical dietetic management process to patient care for the following conditions (as primary conditions and as co-morbidities): - gastrointestinal and pancreatic disease, - liver disease, - cancer (support of patients throughout the disease and its treatment), - chronic and acute renal failure, - pulmonary disease, - neurological disorders, - following surgery and trauma 2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the appropriate application of nutrition support and modalities including parenteral, enteral and oral supplementation. 3. appropriately use nutrition screening procedures, and interpret a range of nutritional assesment measurements, 4. demonstrate understaning and capability to provide appropriate charting in medical histories, 5. plan patient discharge and follow up care in situations that include acute clinical, ambulatory, rehabilitative and extended care areas, 6. demonstrate understanding of the clinical outcomes of dietetic management for the cnoditions listed above, and their use in research and practice to formulate best practice guidelines.

Assessment: Examination (3 hour): 40% + Major case study: 20% + nutrition care plans (x9): 20% + Pratical assessment: 20% + Submission of jounral of reflective practice: ungraded

Contact Hours: 6 hours per week contact

Prerequisites: Completion of Years 1, 2 and 3 of the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics

Corequisites: BND4021: Food Service Management
