Social nutrition (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: At the completion of the course the students will have an understanding of 1. Why Australians eat the way they do 2. The sociological perspective of why Australians eat the way they do 3. The social context in which food is produced and consumed 4. The links between global food policy, public policy in Australia, and the social patterning of food consumption 5. The health implications of changing consumption patterns within a social context, the drivers for change and their implications. The role of Government in this area 6. Critical analysis of the current controversial areas of food and nutrition with development of skills to critically assess the media 7. The cultural diversity apparent in food choice and its implications for nutrition practice

Assessment: Examination: 30% + Analytical paper: 25% + Group assignment: 15% + Reading reaction papers and participation: 20% + Food related exercise: 10%
