Synopsis:
Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will have: 1. Gained an understanding of the role of electronic and other media in mediating images, representations and assessments of Australian Indigenous people and issues. 2. Gained an understanding of Indigenous perspectives on how the legacy of colonisation impacts upon Australian Indigenous communities today. 3. Gained an understanding of how Indigenous communities and their organisations have engaged in political struggle in the realms of art, sport, government, politics and economy as means to exercise self-determination. 4. Engaged in written and oral presentations which reflect these understandings and value the interdisciplinary approaches to study of this kind. 5. Developed organisational and research skills and used these to write in a coherent manner, with suitable referencing of sources provided. 6. Developed oral skills through the presentation of information and ideas in a coherent manner within the tutorial context, based upon research of suitable materials.
Assessment: Discussion paper (1500 words): 30% + Essay (2000 words): 45% + Class test (1000 words): 25%
Contact Hours: 3 hours (1 x 2 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
Prerequisites: AIS1010 or permission of Undergraduate Co-ordinator
