Advanced standing

The following credit transfers have been standardised for the Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance)/Bachelor of Computing. In all cases, at least 96 points (comprising 48 points for business units and 48 points for computing units) must be completed at Monash University before a candidate is eligible for the award.

Computing

The Faculty of Information Technology has established articulation arrangements with several TAFE courses into the Bachelor of Computing.

The faculty also has in place several arrangements for advanced standing for applicants with completed international higher diplomas in computer studies from polytechnics and universities in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

General course information

This course aims to produce graduates who are able to evaluate and implement new computer-based information technology in the banking and finance industry.
This course is offered either on a full-time basis of at least four years duration or on a part-time basis of at least eight years duration.
Candidates completing this program qualify for the degrees of Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) and Bachelor of Computing.

Majors and other studies in the degree

Students must complete a major specialisation in banking and finance and other studies from the disciplines taught on the Caulfield campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Students must also complete a major specialisation and other studies from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering in the Faculty of Information Technology.

Course structure

The degree requirements are:
(a) Students must complete 18 units (108 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:
(i) Inner core - six compulsory units (36 credit points):

(ii) Outer core - six outer-core units (36 credit points), including the two compulsory units (12 credit points) listed below and a further four units (24 credit points) from the remaining units listed below:

(iii) Strand - the following six units (36 credit points) are compulsory and complete a major specialisation in banking and finance:

(b) Students must complete 16 units (96 credit points) from the Faculty of Information Technology as follows:
(i) 13 compulsory units (78 credit points):

(ii) Three elective units (18 credit points):

Computing electives may be units from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering. These units may have codes of COT, SFT or CSE, or information systems units from the Department of Information Management and Systems.
(c) Students must also satisfy the following regulations:
(i) A total of 34 units (204 credit points) over a maximum of 10 years
(ii) Overall, a maximum of 14 units (84 credit points) at first-year level

(iii) A minimum of eight units (48 credit points) at third-year level, of which at least four units (24 credit points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
The degree requires the equivalent of four-and-a-quarter years of full-time study, but can be completed in four years by accelerating with an overload of 12 points. The degree must be completed in a maximum of 10 years of study.

Professional accreditation

The degree satisfies the educational requirements for senior associate membership of the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance. Holders of the degree who have not completed the two years of employment in the banking and finance industry required for senior associate membership are eligible for associate membership in the interim.
On graduating, candidates will satisfy the educational requirements of the Australian Computer Society.

Progression to further studies

Completion of the BBus(Banking and Finance)/BComp will enable progression to an honours year and a variety of postgraduate courses either at Monash or other Australian or overseas universities. Details of specific postgraduate courses are available on inquiry from the faculty.
