Business and Economics

Bachelor of Business (Accounting)/Bachelor of Computing

General course information

This course is a combination of two degree programs. It aims to provide a sound accounting and computing basis that will enable graduates to deal with any form of accounting and business activity, particularly the application of computerised business systems.
Candidates completing this program qualify for the degrees of Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and Bachelor of Computing.

Majors and other studies in the degree

Students must complete a major specialisation in accounting and other studies from the disciplines taught on the Caulfield campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Students must also complete a major specialisation from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering in the Faculty of Information Technology.

Course structure

The degree requirements are:

(a) Students must complete 18 units (108 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:
(i) Inner core - six compulsory units (36 credit points):

(ii) Outer core - six outer-core units (36 credit points), including the two compulsory units (12 credit points) listed below and a further four units (24 credit points) from the remaining units listed below:

Note that students not following outer core recommendations may not be eligible for accreditation by the professional bodies.
(iii) Strand - the following six units (36 credit points) are compulsory and complete a major specialisation in accounting:

(b) Students must complete 16 units (96 credit points) from the Faculty of Information Technology as follows:
(i) 13 compulsory units (78 credit points):

(ii) Three elective units (18 credit points):

(c) Students must also satisfy the following regulations:
(i) A total of 34 units (204 credit points) over a maximum of 10 years
(ii) Overall, a maximum of 14 units (84 credit points) at first-year level.

(iii) A minimum of eight units (48 credit points) at third-year level, of which at least four units (24 credit points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
The degree requires the equivalent of four-and-a-quarter years of full-time study, but can be completed in four years by accelerating with an overload of 12 points. The degree must be completed in a maximum of 10 years of study.

Professional accreditation

This program is accredited with CPA Australia and with The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Provided students complete all units specified by these bodies they will qualify for associate membership of CPA Australia and entry to the CA program of the ICAA.
On graduating, candidates will satisfy the educational requirements of the Australian Computer Society.

Progression to further studies

Completion of the BBus(Acc)/BComp will enable progression to an honours year and a variety of postgraduate courses either at Monash or other Australian or overseas universities. Details of specific postgraduate courses are available on inquiry with the faculty.

Other information

Reversion to a single degree

1. During the course of study, a candidate may apply for an internal transfer to continue studies for one degree only. If this is granted, the candidate shall discontinue studies for one degree and, with the approval of the faculty board which administers the degree to be continued, he or she shall complete the course of study for the degree in accordance with any conditions and requirements and within the time period specified and approved by that faculty board.

2. A candidate, having completed all the requirements of the Bachelor of Business (Accounting), may apply to the Faculty of Business and Economics to graduate in the completed degree. In this case, they will be required to discontinue the other part of their double degree.
