Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Performing Arts*

Objectives

The combined Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Performing Arts course provides students with an opportunity to develop their performance and academic skills in music, while expanding their analytical and critical knowledge of other performing arts disciplines. Therefore, each student will gain experience in specific musical training and instruction as appropriate, with the added benefit of a broader practical and academic experience in the performing arts. The program will be particularly appropriate to students who wish to pursue creative enterprises that cross existing boundaries, genres and disciplines, such as musical theatre and multimedia performance. Students will undertake the discipline-based component of the BPA in drama and theatre studies. They will be encouraged to open their horizons of understanding and imagination to the many new materials, ideas and values with which they will be confronted.

In the music component, students will develop:

• music performance skills in solo, chamber and large ensemble contexts
• training and experience in instrumental and vocal pedagogy, in both theory and practice
• training in music theory and analysis, including harmony, part writing, and related theoretical areas
• research techniques in music history from the Middle Ages to the present, including the historical context and development within the principal historical periods, and
• an understanding of music literature in various cultural, religious, ceremonial, ethnic, and commercial contexts, including traditions of both world music and popular music.

In the performing arts component, students will develop:

• creative/performance skills in a selected performing arts discipline
• experience in devising and developing practical work across a range of genres
• a sophisticated awareness of creative processes and analytical methodologies in their chosen areas of specialisation, and skill in relating that theoretical expertise to the works they produce
• research techniques, and enhanced oral and written skills in the articulation of clear and coherent argument, and
• a sound knowledge of a range of historical and theoretical contexts appropriate to the performing arts field in which they are studying.

Entry requirements

Entry to the double degree is based on the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Music (ie individual offer) and Bachelor of Performing Arts degrees. All students will be required to satisfy the requirements of an audition or interview.

Course structure

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Performing Arts, students must complete units to the value of a minimum of 192 credit points over the length of the course, of which 96 points should come from performing arts (PER) core units and sequences in drama and theatre studies (DTS), and 96 points from units offered specifically by the School of Music - Conservatorium within the Faculty of Arts.

Students complete:
(a) A drama and theatre studies major (48 points)
(b) A performance major (48 point)
(c) A music performance major (60 points)
(d) A first-year music sequence MUS1100 and MUS1110 (12 points)
(e) Second-year approved music electives (12 points)

(f) Third-year approved music electives (12 points).
