Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine

This 48-credit-point course is specifically designed for general practitioners and aims to achieve the following objectives:

• to foster general practitioner critical appraisal skills in reference to the nature of the discipline, its daily practice and its literature and research basis
• to provide a course of study for general practitioners wishing to expand their knowledge and skills in areas relevant to general practice and to meet their own personal and professional needs as well as the needs of the patients and the community in which they practise
• to enlarge the pool of potential general practice teachers and researchers which will help enhance the quality and status of general practice teaching and research among professionals and in the wider community.

Opportunities may exist to upgrade to the masters degree. Applicants must have a minimum of two years postgraduate experience and be currently registered by the medical board in their respective state, or have a qualification which is eligible to be registered in a state of the Commonwealth.

Course structure

The course consists of two compulsory units:

• MFM2000 Principles of general practice
• MFM2006 Introduction to research methods

and three eight-credit-point elective units or a mix of electives and modules chosen from the following:

• MFM1001 Palliative care
• MFM1002 Clinical nutrition
• MFM1003 Occupational health and safety
• MFM1004 Dermatology
• MFM1005 Preventive care in clinical practice
• MFM1006 Women's health
• MFM1007 Child health
• MFM1008 Practice management
• MFM1012 Community geriatrics
• MFM1014 Musculoskeletal medicine
• MFM1015 Introduction to Developmental disability
• MFM1017 Ethics
• MFM1019 Ophthalmology
• DFM3001 Menopause
• DFM3002 Stress management
• DFM3003 Pain management
• DFM3004 Palliative care
• DFM3005 Preventive care
• DFM3006 Issues in general practice prescribing
• DFM3007 Diabetes
• DFM3008 Men's sexual and reproductive health
• DFM3009 Evidence-based general medicine

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework participation, assignments with occasional special projects and some weekend workshops, plus formal examinations from time to time.
