Graduate Diploma of Business (Management)

Course code: 1741 + Course abbreviation: GradCertBus(Mgt) + Gippsland + Off-campus + Four semesters part-time + Program coordinator: Dr Ali Haidar + Total credit points required: 48

This eight-unit course is designed primarily for graduates who wish to extend their knowledge of management theory and practice and provides an introduction to the functions of general management. Electives offer opportunities for candidates to specialise in global business, services management, organisational behaviour and change management practices.

Course structure

Normally, units are completed at a rate of two units in each of four successive semesters and each unit involves an average of 12 hours of study per week. Flexibility is ensured by permitting completion of two elective units in areas of professional focus.
There are four core units and four electives normally completed over two years of study.

(a) Students must complete four core units (24 credit points)
:

• MGG9370 Management theory and practice
• MGG9324 Human resource management
• MGG9352 Management processes and systems
• MGG9371 Strategic management

(b) Students must complete four units (24 credit points) from the following list:

• MGG5810 Cultural values and management practices
• MGG5820 Management development for global business
• MGX5461 Contemporary issues in globalisation
• MGX5560 Case studies in services management
• MGG9303 Organisational behaviour
• MGG9320 Organisational change and development
• MGG9323 Industrial relations
• MGG9350 Strategic human resource management
• AFG9070 Financial management
• BTG9270 Business law
• ECG9103 Ethics, economy and society
• MKG9470 Marketing management (not offered in 2004)
• MKG9444 Marketing in a foreign environment (not offered in 2004)
• A 5000-level or 9000-level units taught by the Department of Management, other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties of Monash University, subject to program coordinator approval.

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma of Business (Management) at the required standard may be eligible for admission to the Master of Business Management degree offered by off-campus learning, Master of Management degree offered by the Department of Management, Caulfield campus, or the MBA program offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics. In some instances, students may be eligible for admission to a masters degree by research.
