The Department of Accounting and Finance offers the opportunity for people unable to attend formal tertiary institutions the unique study option to gain this highly sought-after degree course by off-campus learning.
This course is principally designed for students seeking a career in the banking and finance industry or who are already employed in the banking and finance industry and are seeking a relevant tertiary qualification on a part-time basis. In addition to a core of business foundation units, the course provides specialist study in a number of key functional areas of relevance to financial institutions and markets.
Students must complete a major sequence in banking and finance.
Supporting studies can be chosen from the other disciplines taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics or any other faculty. These supporting studies can, in some cases, form a second major in a business discipline.
To successfully complete the units to a high standard, it is becoming increasingly essential to have access to a Pentium 2 computer (or at a minimum, a Pentium 166 with Windows 95 or later), as a portion of the learning is via interactive tutorial disks. Students in second year undertaking ETX1100 (Business statistics) will need to have access to an IBM-compatible computer and the spreadsheet package EXCEL (version 97 or above) and will require a calculator, preferably one with statistical keys.
The course is offered on a part-time basis only and is of six years duration by off-campus learning. Students are expected to undertake two units per semester, and pass the equivalent of 24 semester units to be awarded the degree. The duration of each semester is 13 weeks.
