VSA3750Indonesian and Southeast Asian Film and Television (6 points)(ARTS) Leader: David Hanan
Offered: Synopsis: A study of Indonesian cinema since the coming of independence in 1950, examining the Indonesian cinema both as an industry and as a site of expression for Indonesian artists, and of a unique and varied popular culture, in the context of a changing political climate and varying degrees of government regulation. Comparative study will be undertaken in relation to other South East Asian cinemas, particularly Thailand. Attention will be paid to the historical, political, cultural and religious backgrounds of these societies. Also included will be screenings and discussion of news items on Indonesian television, and discussion of structural change in the media in South East Asia. Assessment: Essay (3000 words): 67% + Visual Test (1.5 hours): 33% Contact Hours: 4 hours (1 x screening, 1 x lecture and 1 x tutorial) per week Prerequisites: two units of Visual Culture at second-year level |
