Australian Architecture: Nationality and Imported Forms, 1788 to the Present (6 points)

Synopsis: An exploration of the architecture surrounding us, from European settlement. The unit will emphasise issues and ideas in building design from the later nineteenth century, after an introductory outline of colonial and mid-Victorian architecture. The main focus will be on changes in later nineteenth-century and federation period architecture, emulation of the European and American metropolis; conservatism and nationalism in twentieth-century architecture. Architects considered will include John Horbury Hunt, Walter Burley Griffin, Marian Mahony, Robin Boyd, Roy Grounds, Frederick Romberg, Harry Seidler, Joern Utzon and others.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 45% + Essay(2500 words): 55% + Third year students are expected to undertake wider reading and to show a capacity to work at a more advanced level.

Contact Hours: 2.5 hours (1 lecture and 1 tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: Normally two second year units in Visual Culture or a related discipline
