Synopsis: Biomolecules - structure and properties and function. Proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, vitamins, membranes. Metabolism. Metabolic pathways, synthetic pathways, energy production, control of metabolism. Molecular biology. Gene structure and regulation, recombinant DNA technology. Plant biochemistry. Basic processes relating to plant growth, herbicides and secondary compounds. Biomolecules used in formulation and food chemistry.

Assessment: Mid-year examination (June) (1.5 hours): 25% + Practical work: 15% + Ongoing assessment: 20% + End-of-year examination (2.5 hours): 40%
