Aesthetics and art practice 1: art and ideas (6 points)

Synopsis: The concept of art, its scope and variability will be explored. Fundamental issues in art will be considered, including perception, representation, aesthetic experience, the role of popular culture and creativity. The concept of beauty will also be considered in relation to its possible meanings and cultural frameworks. The concepts of deconstruction, semiotics and the role of language and its relation to perception will be explored. The relationship between contemporary globalised culture and its values in shaping much recent art content will also be discussed. The emphasis in discussion will be on twentieth century and contemporary visual culture.

Assessment: Aesthetics Project: 40%; Tutorial 30%; Project book:30%

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week including 3 hours of lectures and tutorials and 9 hours of independent study

Prerequisites: Either TAD1101 and TAD1102 or TAD1203 and TAD1206
