Synopsis: In recent years, welfare states have been the subject of increasing political and ideological debate over their effectiveness. These debates will be examined in the light of growing international comparisons, and global pressures. Attention will be drawn to national and international ideologies and forces influencing the outcome of these debates.

Assessment: Essay (3000 words) 40% + Essay (6000 words) 60%.
