Youth, Culture and Social Change (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit explores the importance of lives of young people to contemporary sociology, as well as the meanings of the construction of youth as a life phase. Topics covered include: youth cultures and styles, globalisation and consumption, changing transitions to adulthood, media and internet, citizenship and social change, work and leisure.

Assessment: Assignment (1000 words): 25% + Research essay (2500 words): 50% + Class test (1 hour): 25% + Students taking this unit at 3rd year level must demonstrate wider reading and greater depth of critical analysis in their assessment tasks than 2nd year level students.

Contact Hours: 2 hour seminar per week

Prerequisites: First-year SCY sequence or permission
