Global Sociology (6 points)

Synopsis: The unit is an introduction to the discipline of sociology with a specific focus on the application of sociological ideas and concepts to issues of global concern. The unit examines critically those issues that extend beyond the traditional boundaries of nation-states, and analyses forms of power, resistance and inequality that underpin and shape such issues. Topics covered include nationhood and globalisation, uneven development, environmental degradation, work and employment, and consumption.

Assessment: Short essay (1000 words): 25% + Long essay (1500 words): 35% + Final examination (2 hour): 40%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week (two 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour tutorial)
