Social Theory, Belief and History (12 points)

Synopsis: Through the selected writings of a number of influential social theorists, the unit seeks to investigate the ways they consider issues of construction of meaning and knowledge in history and religious beliefs. Students will reflect critically on writings from Theodor Eagleton, Antonio Gramsci, Fredric Jameson and Georgy Lukacs and will examine such questions as the influence of religious belief on their thought and their contribution to the understanding of belief.

Assessment: Seminar presentation (3000 words): 30% + Seminar preparation and participation: 10% + Essay (5000 words): 60%
