Gender in Asian Politics (6 points)

Synopsis: An introduction to gender as a tool in political analysis in Asia; an investigation into the relevance of feminist theory in an Asian setting; gender representation, organisation and participation in public life in Asia; a study of policy areas relating to controversial gender issues such as marriage laws, prostitution, population policies, work and militarisation; an investigation into forces for change in the politics of gender; a study of the impact on gender in Asia from globalisation and democratisation.

Assessment: One essays (2000 words): 40% + Oral presentation: 10% + Examination (2 hours): 50%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week

Prerequisites: A first year sequence in Politics or permission
