Synopsis: The unit aims to familiarise students with various research methods appropriate to musicology. In particular the unit provides an introduction to the practical aspects of historical musicology and ethnomusicology, concentrating on methodologies associated with bibliographic studies, textual criticism, archival research, organology, iconography and performance practice.

Assessment: Seminar participation: 10% + Oral report: 10% + Seven written assignments (8000 words total): 80%
