MUS4200Keyboard Music (12 points)(ARTS) Leader: Carol Williams
Offered: Synopsis: The unit surveys the history of keyboard instruments from the earliest hydraulic organ to the latest electronic reconstruction. In terms of repertoire, the 'peak' pieces will be examined against the background of styles and forms of lesser-known works. The relationship between origin and function is a topic of particular interest, since keyboard music in its earliest expressions either provided "intabulations" of vocal music or served as dance music. Assessment: Written (4 short assignments): 10% + 4 short class papers of 15 minutes each: 10% + Essay (4000 words): 40% + Examination (3 hours): 40% Contact Hours: 3 hours (2 x lectures and 1 seminar) per week |
