MICA paramedic cardiac emergencies (12 points)

Synopsis: This subject provides the background to advanced cardiac life support, the historical development of the MICA system and the concept of pre-hospital coronary care. Related content includes: cardiac anatomy and physiology; the natural history of ischaemic heart disease; cardiovascular pathology; interpretation of electrocardiographic rhythms and waveforms; and specific drug therapy for the management of uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction. The role and skills required of the MICA paramedic to assist patients and families in crisis is explored.

Assessment: Examinations: 75% + Small group activity: 15% + Clinical problem solving worksheet: 10% + Practical skills assessment: Pass/Fail

Contact Hours: 312 hours including 160 hours direct contact

Prerequisites: employment by an Ambulance Service
