Molecular biology: Genes and their expression (6 points)

Synopsis: Topics include the molecular nature of nucleic acids and the mechanism by which they specify proteins; mutations and their consequences; the impact of viruses, mobile genetic elements and extranuclear organelle genomes on the genetic material of the nucleus; expression of genetic information and how it is regulated.

Assessment: Mid-semester test (45 min): 10% + Examinations (3 hours): 65% + Laboratory training: 15% + Syndicate sessions and assignments: 10%

Contact Hours: Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour small group teaching or practical exercise per week

Prerequisites: BIO1011 and BIO1022

Prohibitions: BTH2746, BMS1062
