Neonatal care (6 points)

Synopsis: On completion of this unit, the student should be able to: describe the characteristics of the normal neonate, and variations from normal; provide care for a neonate immediately following (a) a normal birth, (b) caesarian birth; perform a physical examination of a neonate; apply knowledge of feeding methods to the care of neonates; educate parents about safe and appropriate care measures for their new baby; demonstrate effective skills and knowledge in neonatal resuscitation; recognise and provide appropriate care for a range of neonates with variations from normal state; explore psychological aspects for parents whose baby has a variation in state.

Assessment: Assignment 40% + Case study 30% + Clinical practice reflections + 30% Clinical Practice pass/fail

Prerequisites: MID6611 Scientific Foundation for Midwifery Practice

Corequisites: MID6613 Integrated Midwifery Practice
