Synopsis: This unit covers the operations of the World Trade Organisation. Explanation of the beginnings and basic principles of the GATT and the relevance to the WTO Agreement. Current disputes are concerned with the non-respect of basic GATT/WTO principles. GATT as a de facto international organisation and the steps towards the conclusion of the Uruguay Round. The WTO is examined as a new and formal international organisation, the legal structure of its various agreements and its accession process. The substantive rules of the specific multilateral agreements negotiated during the Uruguay Round including those on agriculture, textiles, subsidies, dumping and safeguards.

Assessment: Research paper (4000 words): 50% + Examination (2 hours): 50%
