Laboratory medicine (6 points)

Synopsis: Systematic pathology and the laboratory investigation of infectious disease will be provided through lectures, tutorials, practical / laboratory sessions and case studies. Students will develop an understanding of the aetiology, pathogenesis, natural history, morphologic and clinical features of common and/or important diseases. In addition, students will gain appreciation of the role of the autopsy and the role of clinical laboratories in establishing a diagnosis. Students will gain an understanding of requirements for laboratory test requests, specimen collection techniques, laboratory testing procedures and interpretation of laboratory reports.

Assessment: Microbiology (Written & Practical examinations) 40% + Pathology (Practical & MCQ examination) 60%
