Intercultural Communication (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit provides a theoretical perspective on basic concepts of intercultural communication: face and politeness in language; the relation between cultural values and discourse; cultural variation in speech acts, turn taking rules and formulaic patterns; cultural differences in the organisation of discourse, including written discourse, meetings, inter-cultural encounters; and examines their interaction in intercultural communication in Australia and elsewhere.

Assessment: Written research assignment (2750 words): 50% + Class test (2 hours): 40% + Class participation: 10%

Contact Hours: 2 hour seminar per week

Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in Linguistics, English or Communications or a language
