Synopsis: This unit will provide students with a historical perspective on the institution of journalism. It will familiarise students with the various technological, political, social and cultural conditions that influence journalism. The basic objective of this unit is to foster critical enquiry through developing specific news writing and reporting skills and a comprehensive knowledge of the networks of power journalists are engaged with.

Assessment: Three current affairs quizzes (on-campus) or newspaper reading reports (for off-campus students): 10% + three news intro's: 15% + two news writing assignments: 20% + Contact book: 15% + two reporting assignments: 40%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week (1-hour lecture and 2-hour tutorial)
