Italian Studies 7 (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit integrates two components: (i) Language (80%) and (ii) Aspects of Italian Culture (80%). Language: a variety of texts regarding aspects of contemporary Italy, through which to explore register variations and discourse strategies and actively engage in debates on aspects of contemporary culture. The unit reviews areas of syntax considered problematic and aims at consolidating oral and written expression. Translation is studied to foster awareness of comparative linguistic structures in Italian and English. Aspects of Italian Culture: a study of Italian history and culture from the 14th to 17th century, which will include in-depth analysis of relevant texts.

Assessment: (i) Language: Continuous assessment: 55% + End of semester exam (2 hours): 25% + (ii) Aspects of Italian Culture: Test: 10% + Short essay: 10%

Contact Hours: 4 hours (1 hour culture, 2 hour workshop and a 1 hour oral workshop) per week

Prerequisites: ITA3060 or equivalent language competence
