The Holocaust (6 points)

Synopsis: The unit focuses on the period 1933-1945. Major topics covered include Jewish life in the interwar period, anti-Semitism, the Nazi State, the ghettos and the Jewish Councils, the Einsatzgruppen, the functionalist and the intentionalist debate, the camp system, resistance, non-Jewish responses in occupied Europe and the allied governments. The unit deals also with Genocide in History, gender and the Holocaust and the fate of the gypsies.

Assessment: Participation in class: 10% + short essay (1000 words): 20% + long essay (2500 words): 40% + exam (1000 words): 30%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures per week over 9 weeks and one 1-hour tutorial per week over 11 weeks

Prerequisites: A first year sequence in History, or permission
