Synopsis: Students will be introduced to the concepts of load and resistance, load factors and capacity factors and the design criteria for strength and serviceability of structures, the behaviour of timber structural elements: beams, compression members, tension members, floor systems, connections and members subjected to combined actions. Response of timber structures under applied load, load paths through different structural elements, the various concepts on which Australian Design Standards are based and design procedures for timber structures will also be considered.
Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 50% + Major design assignments and research projects: 40% + Laboratory reports: 10%
