GSC2411Media, Culture, Power - Theories of Mass Communications (6 points)(ARTS) Leader: Ned Rossiter
Offered: Synopsis: Nineteenth and twentieth-century accounts of the relation between media, culture and power. Historically dominant political doctrines (liberal-democratic, conservative, marxist) and conceptualisations of society within which accounts of media have been framed. Different conceptions of the'individual','the people' and'the public'. The governance of populations and the role of media in the formative guidance of people's attributes, conduct and social relations. Assessment: Essay one (1750 words): 40% + Essay two (1750 words): 40% + Examination (1000 words): 20% Contact Hours: 2 hours per week (1-hour lecture, 1-hour tutorial) |
