Research Methods in Cognitive Science (6 points)

Synopsis: The methods included in this unit are those necessary for critically examining published research in cognitive science and for conducting basic research on the part of students. These include experimental methods as exemplified in standard laboratory tests, correlational methods often based on field data, and other specialised techniques. Methods of investigation and data collection will be drawn from relevant areas including animal intelligence, machine thought, time perception, parapsychology and measurement of brain activity. Data analysis will be achielved using a variety of statistical packages.

Assessment: Two statistics and research design assignments (750 words each): 20% + Methodology and report writing assignment (1000 words): 20% + Examination (2 hours): 40%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week (two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour laboratory)
