Introduction to Cognitive Science (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit draws on psychology, philosophy, information technology and engineering. Together these disciplines form the core of cognitive science which is concerned with thinking, intelligence, and information processing in humans and machines. In addition to practical matters such as the design of robots, students will be introduced to theoretical issues including whether mind, consciousness, and emotions are uniquely human. Basic principles of computer programming, mechnatronics and mathematics will be introduced with an emphasis on how they may be linked within the context of cognitive science.

Assessment: Two on-line assignments (500 words each): 20% + Essay (2000 words): 30% + Examination (2 hours): 50%

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week (two 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour laboratory)
