Research and Research Methodology in German Language and Linguistics (6 points)

Synopsis: The unit will introduce a practical approach to how to perform German language research. At the more basic level, students will engage in simple library and referencing exercises, and later learn how to undertake empirical research using German language data. [...] In addition to handling basic research concepts such as Theorie Vs Empirik, and description Vs explanation, students will learn to differentiate between quantitative and qualitative approaches and their applications. Assessment: Final test (1 hour): 25% + Library/referencing/resource exercise (750 words): 15% + Major research project (2500 - 3000 words): 60%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (1 x lecture and 2 x tutorials) per week

Prerequisites: GRN1225, GRN1325, GRN1425 or GRN1525

Corequisites: GRN2325, GRN2425, GRN2525 or GRN2625
