Synopsis: Overview of computer organisation and operating principles; number systems, internal data representations, logic and Boolean algebra; CPU; primary memory and secondary memory; input and output devices; system software: OS concepts, DOS, UNIX, Windows, Windows NT, Windows 95, language translators; common application software; security and anti-virus issues; data communication and computer networks; the social aspects of computer applications. Access to the university's computer systems through an Internet service provider is compulsory for off-campus learning students

Assessment: Assignments: 40% + Examination: 60%
