Geophysics: petroleum exploration and basin analysis (6 points)

Synopsis: The geology and geophysics of sedimentary basins with emphasis on exploration for major resources: oil, natural gas, coal. Topics include: how/where sedimentary basins form, their distribution within Australia; the physical environment in a borehole; electric well logging and interpretation; seismic interpretation, acquisition and processing; petroleum geology: source rocks, maturation, migration, traps, reservoir/seal stratigraphy, hydrocarbon preservation, geohistory diagrams; structural geology in sedimentary basins/ salt tectonics; risk analysis.

Assessment: Practical work: 30% + Assignment work: 20% + Examination (3 hours): 50%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical per week, and a 2-day field excursion
