Synopsis: The unit critically evaluates the nature and process of environmental assessment of public and private activities. It examines the need for environmental assessment within sustainability frameworks and considers techniques for valuing and assessing the environment in policy and planning contexts. Through studying methods involved in defining social, health, economic and environmental impacts, relationships between the scientific nature of assessment procedures, community participation and the political nature of environmental decision making will be explored. Projects develop practical skills in preparation of Environmental Impact Statements.

Assessment: Written (3000 words): 80% + Two seminar presentations (2x1000 words): 20%
