Effective Writing 2: Professional Writing (6 points)

Synopsis: Students will be trained in a variety of professional genres of persuasive writing including newspaper interviews and opinion pieces, business correspondence, speeches and report writing. The techniques of plain English will be taught, as well as basic copy-editing skills (including proof-reading symbols). Further, the skills of spoken presentation will be introduced. Students will develop a range of persuasive writing skills in seminar-workshops, which will provide opportunities for writing practice and collaborative revisions. The writing exercises will be considered within a framework of theories of communication, audience and register.

Assessment: Class test (proof-reading skills): 15% + Spoken presentation: 20% + Report writing: 35% + Short assignment: 20% + Participation 10%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (1 hour lecture and 2 hour seminar) per week
