Counselling for the Professions (12 points)

Synopsis: The unit is designed to introduce students to the central approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. It will enable participants to practice counselling skills in a systematic and sequential manner. Students will engage in critical reflection on the development of their skills. They will complete a systematic program of therapy involving the development of a strategic plan for therapy with a client for six sessions. They will demonstrate their understanding of the skills and concepts developed in class. Students will also consider their own material and how that may affect the success of their therapy.

Assessment: Assessment 1: Self-Appraisal of Improvement in Therapeutic Practice. 3000 words (50%) + Assessment 2: Critical Review of an Aid to Counselling. 3000 words (50%).
