Method and Practice of Teaching Music 1A (6 points)

Synopsis: Preparation for teaching of music in post-primary schools, initially focussing on lesson development, presentation and evaluation. Current issues in class music teaching. Methodologies, content, resources and music education principles such as those of Orff, Kodaly, Schafer and Swanwick. Issues including classroom composition, music technology, mixed ensembles, and strategies for music listening.

Assessment: Assessment: Biographical statement (ungraded hurdle requirement), Reflection on teaching: 50%, Teaching material development 50% + Student participation in the unit is vital either on-campus or via the on-line forum.

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week

Prerequisites: Music major
