Method and Practice of Teaching History A (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit introduces the teaching and learning of history as a discipline and as a SOSE strand. The focus is on strategies for assisting secondary students to develop historical knowledge and skills, identify links between the past and the present, and develop values and attitudes consistent with positive citizenship. Seminars include lesson-planning, SOSE curriculum perspectives and values, questioning techniques, cooperative group-work, inquiry methodology, assessment strategies, and using information and communication technologies.

Assessment: Formal lesson plan: 50%; SOSE-Stream/History Resource Guide: 50% + Student participation in the unit is vital and there is a minimum attendance requirement of 80%.

Contact Hours: 3 hours per week

Prerequisites: Students must have at least a minor sequence in history from a recognised institution.
