Synopsis: The history of childhood 1450-present in Europe and Australia and techniques of historical analysis. Topics include the historiography of childhood; childhood in the late medieval period 1300-1450; the rise of individualism and the role of the child 1500-1700; the Industrial Revolution and the changing role of childhood 1760-1860; mass society and institutionalised childhood 1860-1900; ideology and childhood in the twentieth century.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 20% + Book review (1000 words): 20% + Major assignment (2000 words): 60%

Contact Hours: 2 hours per week plus Introductory weekend school (optional)
