Introduction to students with special needs (6 points)

Synopsis: In recent years there has been a marked increase in the number of children and adolescents with special needs entering the regular school. This unit will introduce the diverse range of students with disabilities and impairments who have a significant representation in today's classroom. Specialised topics will be presented which will give a broad overview to the field of special education.

Assessment: Essay (1200 words equiv.): 30% + Information Folder (1200 words equiv.) on any one category of disability - These include; Physical disability; Severe language disorder; Severe emotional disorder; Hearing impairment; Intellectual disability; Autism spectrum disorder; or Visual impairment: 30% + Class presentation (1600 words equiv.): 40%
