Synopsis: This unit examines how the development of literacy is embedded in young children's play and life experiences. Teaching approaches building on what children already know about literacy and which emphasise the role of teachers and parents as co-constructors in developing children's literacy will be examined. The literacy teaching for NESB children will be addressed.

Assessment: Assignment (2400 words): 60% + Written tasks (1600 words): 40% and Hurdle requirement: Eighty percent attendance at lectures/tutorials.
