Mobile systems and networks (4 points)

Synopsis: Land and satellite-based mobile radio services, systems and networks. Mobile cellular telephone and wireless LAN systems. Characteristics of the mobile radio channel; multipath fading, shadowing and Doppler effects. Modulation, coding and diversity to combat these adverse effects. Switching and other protocols in support of mobility. Multiaccess methods. Mobility management. Future developments in mobile telecommunications and associated new design problems.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 70% + Laboratory and assignment work: 30%

Contact Hours: 26 lectures, 26 hours of tutorial and laboratory classes

Prerequisites: ECE3202 and MAT3901
