Synopsis: The work of Richard Cantillon, David Hume, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Thomas Malthus and Karl Marx with special reference to the economics of value, distribution and accumulation. The work of W S Jevons, Alfred Marshall and J M Keynes with special reference to economic policies proposed by those writers.

Assessment: Written (2000-word essay): 25% + Class paper: oral presentation: 25% + Examination (2 hours): 50%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week

Prerequisites: Any two second-year economics units
