Synopsis: What is globalisation of economic activity and why is it occurring? What is an economic system and what distinguishes the different economic systems today? How does globalisation impact economic systems? For example, how is China approaching globalisation today as compared to the Maoist era? Will globalisation force economies in Australia, Britain, Germany, Japan and Malaysia to become increasingly non-interventionist? Does the 'third way' of Tony Blair in Britain offer a solution? How do trading blocs like the European Union and APEC influence and respond to globalisation? Why has Germany adapted to globalisation better than Japan? How will joining the WTO influence China's system?

Assessment: Written (250-word assignment): 10% + Mid-semester test: 20% + Discussion class: 20% + Examination (2.5 hours): 50%

Contact Hours: Two 1.5-hour classes per week
