Offered: Synopsis: The economic impact of British rule in India since the early nineteenth century, with some broad references to other regions, where useful. Themes include the history of famine; caste, religion and economic development; modern and traditional entrepreneurship; economic exploitation; destruction of handicrafts; the impact of international capitalism; agricultural growth and economic diversification. Assessment: Written (3000-word essay): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 60% Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week Prerequisites: ECC1000 and one of ECC1100 or ECC2100 or equivalent Prohibitions: ECC3500, ECC3504 |
