Synopsis: The unit is designed to introduce the subjects of Sign systems and Framing devices, Subject and Subjectivity, Phenomenology, Reception Theory, Critical Theory and the Avant-Garde, Postcolonialism, post-Humanism: we shall discuss topics such as the literary text, photography, the status of the work of art, theories of meaning and reception, and include consideration of the theoretical works of Bourdieu, Derrida, Husserl, Barthes, and others.

Assessment: Two essays (4500 words each): 50% each
